A CV is often called a resume in US job applications. Use the format and terminology requested by the employer; the aim is the same: make your relevant experience clear and accurate.

What to prepare before creating your CV

  1. A target role. Read the job description and identify the responsibilities you can support with real examples. Do not add a skill just because it appears in the advert.
  2. Your education and experience. Gather accurate dates, responsibilities, projects and qualifications. Part-time work, volunteering and university projects can provide useful evidence for early-career roles.
  3. Your contribution. Note what you personally did, the tools you used and the outcome you can verify. Use numbers only when you know they are accurate.
  4. Relevant details. Include the contact information and links you intend to share with employers. Avoid unnecessary sensitive information.

AN ORIGINAL, FICTIONAL EXAMPLE

Replace a vague responsibility with a specific contribution

Vague: “Worked on a university group project and helped with data.”

Clearer: “Cleaned survey responses for a university research project, documented missing values and prepared charts used in the team presentation.”

The revised bullet explains the task and the candidate’s contribution. It does not invent a performance percentage, qualification or professional job title. If your real work produced a measurable result, add that result only when you can support it.

Why this matters for interview preparation

An interviewer might ask how you identified missing values, why you chose a particular chart or what you would change next time. A clear CV bullet gives you a real example to discuss rather than a claim to memorise.

Review every AI-assisted CV draft

Check accuracy

Verify dates, qualifications, employers, tools and results. Remove anything you cannot explain honestly.

Make the most useful evidence for the target role easy to find. Use the employer’s terminology only where it accurately describes your experience.

Check the final document

Review spelling, formatting and links. Follow the employer’s requested file format and application instructions.

AI assistance does not guarantee an applicant-tracking-system score, an interview or a job offer. Use your judgement and, when available, feedback from a careers adviser.

Turn your CV into interview examples

Choose one bullet. Explain the situation, your responsibility, your action and the outcome aloud. Then ask yourself what evidence supports the result and which part you personally owned.
